There’s a sense of quiet desolation and abandonment on a raw December morning at Freeport’s historic Nautical Mile. Just weeks earlier, Superstorm Sandy tore a murderous path along the East Coast, bludgeoning the dozens of restaurants, crab shacks, fish markets, bars and boutiques that comprise the popular summer destination.
The bi-annual Long Island Restaurant Week kicks off on Sunday, November 3, for eight days ending on Sunday, November 11.
The Gourmet Whaler, in the old seafaring town of Cold Spring Harbor, is a mixture of restaurant, coffee shop, ice cream parlor and retail store. It is known for owner/chef Sean Leonard’s famous fish tacos, but it’s just as well known for its resident ghost, Lillian Feldman, who has been haunting the place for years.
The ghost has been affectionately named Iris because many people have sensed a female presence in the building. Others have claimed that three spirits abound, including a maitre d’, who has been seen holding a towel over his arm.
