The Eat: A truly perfect apple pie.

The Place: The legendary Briermere Farms in Riverhead.

The Story: Even though fall doesn’t officially begin until Monday, September 23, let’s be real: Our tastebuds switched over to apple-and-pumpkin-everything a couple of weeks ago—and no one puts apples, and autumn flavors in general, to better use than the bakers at Briermere Farms.

Deemed the best place to buy pies in New York State by Buzzfeed, Briermere Farms is a Long Island institution. Head there on Thanksgiving Eve and you’ll wait in line for hours (and still leave empty-handed if you haven’t called ahead); because what All American in Massapequa is to burgers, Briermere is to pies—and for good reason. Take one bite of their apple crumb, in particular, and you’ll understand.

Dense with perfectly stewed and spiced local apples, and topped with a generous heap of sweet, buttery crumbs, this pie is everything we want our autumn-inspired sweets to taste like. We never leave with just one.

Pro Tip: Grab a bottle of apple cider on your way out of Briermere’s small bakery for an all-apple feast you can’t beat. What a way to welcome fall.
