Fat Tuesday can be any day of the year in Oceanside. Mighty Catch Cajun Seafood & Bar is opening today, August 29, and the menu is as indulgent as Mardi Gras in New Orleans. It’s surf ’n turf with an emphasis on surf, and each dish has a southern flair.

Owner Tom Lau has been craving this opportunity for several years.

“This is the concept I always wanted to do,” says Lau, who also owns chain restaurants like Butcher’s Smokehouse, Plaza Pizza and Halal Guys. “I traveled to New Orleans, fell in love with the southern cuisine and decided I wanted to do a cajun seafood restaurant.”

Lau is partial to shrimp, and there’s plenty of that on the menu. The hottest dish—literally—is the bang bang shrimp. Tossed in house chili sauce, it’s best enjoyed with a drink close by, though pineapple chunks relieve some of the heat. Chef specials include a mighty ribeye steak and a Taste of NOLA (grilled half lobster, jumbo shrimp, crab cake, roasted red potatoes and cajun corn). The Mighty Catch Feast is essentially dinner for two. The bountiful dish mixes snow crab, shrimp, crawfish and clams, plus a side of corn. It also comes with a full set of equipment—bibs, gloves, crackers and a bucket for shells.

The decor helps set a Mardi Gras atmosphere. There are photos of New Orleans, nautical accents like fishnets and anchors and black-painted wine bottles that spell out “Paris” in a nod to the French Quarter. Live music is on the way, and Lau hopes to reel in families and young professionals.

The Manhattan location is set to open in October, with one in Philadephia slated for December.

And he’s not ruling out another Mighty Catch on Long Island.

“This will be the first one, and we’ll go from there.”

Mighty Catch Cajun Seafood & Bar is located at 2757 Long Beach Rd. Oceanside, N.Y. 11572
