The doughnut craze has officially hit Long Island and Dough Me a Flavor in Wantagh has the perfect combination of ambiance and eclectic mix of doughnut toppings to satisfy your cravings. It sits conveniently next to the Wantagh Long Island Railroad Station on Railroad Avenue and beckons the commuters and passersby alike. The retro pink sign is attractive and the clean wooden floors and neatly set stools that sit perched along the wall are inviting. This is the place to be to appease your sweet tooth and fulfill your secret doughnut sugar fantasies. The shop offers unique pre-made doughnut creations in such flavors such as Milk and Cookies, French Toast, Coffee Crumb and a Maple Bacon one which I hear is worth the trip alone.
We are drawn into the shop by the sweet aroma of the fluffy pastries. The selection of pre-made doughnuts sit beautifully in a tall case at the counter. My boys are in awe of its presence and can’t seem to jab their finger quick enough at their selection on the glass before finding the next one to point to. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and exude an excitement for their product which I haven’t witnessed in a long time.
The real excitement here is the “create your own doughnut” experience. It seems as though the novelty of being apart of the food process is what excites and attracts all ages to this very special place. Visitors are given a choice between a traditional style or cake-style doughnut. The next step is a generous slathering of vanilla, chocolate or glazed syrup across the top. Customers can finish off their creation with a choice of three toppings. Toppings include such tasty morsels as Oreos bits, Fruity Pebbles, M&M’s, Reeses Pieces, and a whole slew of yummy candy tidbits. My son, John, opts for gummy bears only atop his vanilla covered pastry. I’m not sure that would be included in my own doughnut conception, but John is over the moon with his choice.
The doughnuts themselves are rich, fluffy and perfectly delicious. This is what gourmet doughnuts should be. Even without the toppings, I am hooked and go in for another bite. The boys are pleased with their choices and are elated to sit at the tall counter to enjoy their dessert. I am further delighted when I spot their coffees on tap. Yes—on tap! Dough Me A Flavor serves locally owned Sail Away Coffee Company’s regular cold brew and Nitro Cold Brew on tap. I am further smitten with this place as I happily nibble at my doughnut and sip on the delectably creamy nitrogen infused caffeinated beverage.
We stay only as long as the sugar rush allows and dream about our return; new flavors and new toppings await us. We have found gourmet doughnut heaven here.
