If you’re anything like us—and we’re guessing you are, since you’re reading Edible—you’re the sort of person who enjoys a craft cocktail. To that we say two things: First, welcome to the club; and second, we have some really good news.
On Sunday, May 7, the NY Cocktail Expo will return to Long Island for its second annual event. This year, the expo will take place at Mulcahy’s in Wantagh over the course of two sessions: From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and then again from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
“The expo is a great coming together of enthusiasts and industry folks alike,” says founder Matt Kourie, who started imagining what an event like the NY Cocktail Expo would look like many years ago, in the midst of what he calls some “cocktail archeology.”
“I’m from Long Island,” says Kourie, “and a few years ago I started thinking about how we’re living in the second golden era of craft cocktails and I wanted to find signs of this on Long Island. So I set out to find some great local cocktail bars. Right away, I found one or two places and started talking to the bartenders there, asking them where to go for great cocktails. It took me on some great cocktail archeology and I thought, ‘We need to spearhead this and get these guys together and do an expo.'”

So he did. The first NY Cocktail Expo took place on April 9, 2016 in Rockville Centre, where the event quickly sold out with over 400 guests. The decision to expand the expo this year, says Kourie, was a no-brainer.
“On May 7, we’ll have 10-12 different spirit distributors and 20-35 vendors,” says Kourie. “Each participating cocktail bar will be creating unique cocktails with the spirits distributors. It’s especially exciting, because we have so many incredible bars and bartenders participating this year.”

This is not overstatement, or a founder’s specific sort of hubris. This year’s list of participating bars really does read like a who’s who of the Long Island cocktail scene: The Brixton, Pentimento Restaurant, Vaux Hall, Salt & Barrel, The Rust & Gold, Flight Patchogue, Treme, Blackbird Kitchen & Cocktails, Morrison’s, Verde Wine Bar, and more.
“Every bar that’s participating meets our high standards of craft,” says Kourie. “These are bars that are doing great things. They’re making bitters and awesome tiki drinks. They’re barrel-aging their own spirits. These guys are the best of the best.”
Tickets for the NY Cocktail Expo start at $60 per person and include 1 cocktail and spirit tasting from each exhibitor, small bites and access to win giveaways and prizes. VIP tickets are also available for $80 per person and include early entry and access to a special VIP lounge.
