Long Island Catering Company Gives Back For Thanksgiving

One catering company is taking the idea of giving thanks a step further this holiday, hoping to provide Thanksgiving meals to 50 single-mom families on Long Island.

For the past five years, Insatiable EATS has made meals for 15 to 25 single-mom families below the poverty line working with Citizens 4 Humanity. This year, the catering company plans to ramp up their donations by matching every meal ordered from the Farm-to-Feast Package-to-Go with a donation of the same quantity to a family-in-need for Thanksgiving.

“I know how hard it is,” says Sheila Minkel, event director at Insatiable EATS, who grew up in a single-mom household with five siblings. “Groceries are so expensive.”

The group also donates food through Maureen’s Haven and a senior center. Using local volunteers and donations from local farms, they work for the 48 hours prior to Thanksgiving to ready and hand deliver the meals..

“How can people enjoy their Thanksgiving when other people aren’t,” asks chef Marco Barilla. The project began when Barilla was working as a private chef on the East End. After watching a lot of food go to waste, he started the Frugal Food Project whereby his clients would help buy groceries for those in need.

Sourcing from the East End, Insatiable EATS uses farms like Satur Farms, Garden of Eve and the Green Thumb for most of their produce and meat.

“People think that they have to go to Pennsylvania, Amish country to get their turkeys,” says Minkel. The heritage turkeys they buy from Miloski Poultry Farm in Calverton are hormone free, free range and have 25 percent less fat than a supermarket turkey

As for the food, the menu is traditional but with gourmet twists. Customers can order a finished turkey, as well as sides, from cranberry-candy orange relish to truffled mashed potatoes; highlights include duck stuffing, Plymouth succotash and roasted squash with brown butter and sage.

For starters, Insatiable EATS offers soups like broccoli or pumpkin, as well as prosciutto bites or caramelized onion and gruyere tartlets. Pies are sourced from Riverhead’s famous Briermere’s Farm.

Insatiable EATS accepts orders through November 23rd, except for turkeys. Finished turkeys must be ordered by November 22. Sides range in pricing from $15 – $30 and a turkey for eight can be between $115 – $147, depending on the roast style. Food is deliverable anywhere on Long Island, call 631.377.3353.
