If you didn’t get it together in time to submit your forms to enter the 2015 Long Island Fair, you just got a reprieve. (As someone who got her forms in photo-finish-style last Friday — thank goodness for on-line submission — I share your back-to-school pain) The deadline has been extended until this Friday, September 18. Entry forms must be dropped off at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration or submitted online. Mail entries will no longer be accepted.
This is just for the forms, so they can get ready to receive your entries for judging on the appointed days. Once you get the forms in you have a few days to get your actual items together for submission. Culinary, vegetables and fruits will be accepted Thursday, Sept. 24 from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and culinary will also be accepted on Friday, Sept. 25 from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Check the Premium Book for details.
The Long Island Fair is one of the oldest agricultural fairs in the country. Set on the fairgrounds of the Old Bethpage Village Restoration, it is an old-timey, family-oriented ton of fun, whether you have entered your prize tomatoes or herb basket or not. Guess the weight of the giant pumpkin, admire the horses and ponies, eat grilled corn, ginormous turkey legs and sticky candy apples, watch the jugglers and magicians and the quirky Punch & Judy puppet show, and generally have a wholesome time outdoors. There are even hot-air balloon rides, weather permitting. Twenty thousand people visited last year during the two weekends of the show. Those who submit get a free entry pass.
