It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year: Farmers Market Season

I admit it, I am a farmers market junkie, a total sucker for the not only the best and freshest produce and artisanal products, but for ambience and sense of community the markets bring. Neighbors greeting neighbors, farmers sharing cooking tips, artisans seducing with delectable goodies, live music — yup, I am all over my local market.

My summer Sunday mornings begin with a cup of coffee from Gentle Brew followed by some cheese from The Big Cheese, jams from Miss Amy, smoked sausage from the Ridgewood Pork Store, horseradish dills from Divine Brine, perhaps a savory tart from Sugar Rush Bake Shop, strawberries from Fred Terry’s Farm and if I am early enough, sea scallops from Seatuck Fish. These cheese purveyors, jam makers, smokers, bakers, farmers and fishers are more than just vendors. Mark, Amy, Jonel, Jeanne, Ethel and Chris are friends, too. Sample some cheese, get some tips on grilling veggies, commiserate about the state of commercial shellfishing and gab about the weather; all of this just adds to the experience of knowing where your food comes from and who is harvesting and producing it.

We have assembled an extensive list of farmers markets by communities throughout Nassau and western Suffolk counties. For a list of markets on the East End, click here. We will continue to update this list as new markets pop up or information changes.
