This year my husband’s bagpipe band, Northport Pipe and Drum Band, decided to jazz up its annual holiday party with a dress code; the costume de rigueur was to be ugly Christmas sweaters. Faced with the prospect of spending an evening with jovial bagpipers wearing sweaters that at one time I considered to be fashionable, I did what any bonne vivante would do; I phoned Blondie’s Bake Shop in Centerport and queried owner Jess Kennaugh to see if she could whip up a batch of ugly Christmas sweater cookies. Without a hint of hesitation, she replied, “We can absolutely make these happen.” And, make them happen she did, two dozen melt-in-your-mouth sugar cookies, each one decorated as uniquely an ugly Christmas sweater.
Friday December 12 is National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. What better day to break out your favorite Marisa Christina or Talbots ramie-cotton blend Santa sweater and nibble on some ugly Christmas sweater sugar cookies? Psst, Blondie’s Bake Shop can pretty much make any iconic Christmas cookie happen. Leg Lamps, anyone?
