Reconnect with Your Foodshed This Weekend with Tastings, Tunes, a Community Garden Build and Some Farmers Markets

Kings Park Farmers Market.Southdown Marketplace in Huntington is kicking off the summer season with an afternoon event featuring over 20 local food purveyors. On Saturday May 17 from 12-5pm, stop by the Market and sample goodies from Long Island’s best farms and food and drink artisans including Morning Sunshine Breakfast Cookies, Blue Duck Bakery, Kerber’s Farm, Five Acre Farms, Allen Pickle Works, gourmet sorbet from The Sorbabes and many others. In addition, the crew at Southdown Market is setting up a grilling station; let them inspire your summer BBQs with their selection of USDA prime meats as well as their salads and spreads.

On Saturday May 17, Restoration Farm at Old Bethpage Village Restoration is hosting an adult workshop on Field Songs. Reviving the American tradition of field or work singing, this workshop will be run by experienced farmers and musicians Max Godfrey, Steven “Shepsi” Eaton and Brian Dolphin. The trio will demonstrate how to “bring the rhythm, joy and power of song to your farm, your work, and your life”.

On Saturday May 17, how about spending a little sweat equity at a Community Garden Build? Freeport’s Seed to Table Community Garden at the Zion Cathedral Church of God in Christ needs some help building an additional 8 raised beds (8 were previously built). Roll up your sleeves with Sustainable Long Island and the Cedarmore Corporation, along with volunteers from Long Island Volunteer Center and BJ’s Wholesale Club in this rewarding community project.

Outdoor farmers markets have begun to reopen after their winter slumber. The farm stand at Crossroads Farm at Grossman’s has been open for several weeks with fresh vegetables, jams, honey and seedlings. Their weekly farmers market will be held on Thursdays, beginning on May 15. The farmers market in Long Beach is now open Wednesdays and Saturdays and the Kings Park market returns on Sunday May 18. The Market at the Milleridge Village is back in swing on Sundays in Jericho featuring artisanal foods, produce and crafts.
