Hard cider is so hot right now. The guys at Woodside Orchards in Aquebogue have practically forgone sleep in order to fill growlers with their wares. (I still love the apple-raspberry.) Peconic Bay’s True Believer made its mark, and Lieb Cellars will soon start bottling a hard apple cider, called Rumor Mill. We can only hope there are enough local apples to go around.
Shinn Estate doesn’t have to worry about this, though. They’ve been making hard pear cider using produce from Wickham’s since 2008. “Our cider is dry, still and low in alcohol at six percent,” says Shinn co-owner David Page. “This makes it a wonderful aperitif or delicious ingredient in summer cocktails.” Later this year, Page, who serves as head distiller, will release a Calvados-style alembic brandy distilled from apples and pears. The 2013 vintage cider is available in the tasting room. Get on the list.
