Thankfully, it is often the simple things in life that yield the best results. One sublime example is the Apple Crisp cocktail at Relish in Kings Park. Chef/owner, Steve Cardello didn’t have to reach far for his inspiration, nor his key ingredient—cool, crisp autumn days and a century-old apple orchard.
Richters Orchard has been in operation in Northport since 1900. The current owners, the Amsler family, have been running the 20-acre orchard and pressing apple cider since 1934. At the helm now is the second generation of Amslers: brothers Louis and Andy; Louis’ son recently joined the family business. Open six days a week (closed on Tuesdays), the orchard grows and sells more than 20 varieties of apples and pears (peaches, in season), their own apple cider (pressed on location) and some mulling spices and jams. Simplicity.
Relish is (literally) 2.2 miles east of Richters on Pulaski Road. Fresh apples and apple cider are just a short ride, or even a brisk autumn walk, away. In the simplest of recipes, Steve Cardello combines the best of autumn, here on Long Island.
The Apple Crisp
2 oz. Richter’s apple cider
4 oz. Prosecco
Splash of cinnamon syrup or a sprinkling of ground cinnamon
